TOIVON TUOLLA PUOLEN (THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE).   Aki Kaurismäki, Finland, 2017 (100 mins)
In this deeply humane and quietly hilarious film a middle-aged Finnish travelling salesman sells up his business, escapes from his alcoholic wife, and, with a big win at a shady gambling den, buys a run-down restaurant. Here he employs Khalid (Sherwan Haji), a newly arrived Syrian stowaway, as a cleaner who is attempting to track down his missing sister. Despite his struggles to overcome the Finnish immigration red tape and the ongoing hostility from a local gang he maintains his optimism until fate intervenes.
